Race to the Bottom? Yesterday, the US announced a bid to decrease the government`s subsidies to agriculture by 60 per cent. Today, EU Commissioner Mandelson said the EU could cut the subsidies by 70 per cent. This is a great competition! One could always hope that they would reach 100 per cent in the end. Unfortunately, the EU leaders will never support Mandelson and the upcoming negotiations will blur much of the rest. But the direction is good, no doubt.
