It Works in Mysterious Ways. The EU was seconds away from a decision with possible disastrous consequences in the long run. The EU leaders, due to fierce resistance from Austria, almost denied Turkey the start of accession negotiations they hade been promised. Apparently, it was Croatia that saved Europe. Austria has pushed for Croatian entry into the EU for a long time. And when a report suddenly showed that Croatia was indeed ready to co-operate with the Hague Tribunal, which was the last obstacle, they could also start negotations. And that released the resistance against Turkey from Austria. Thus, the fate of Turkey, in the end, was not decided by anything that Turkey - or indeed the EU - did. If they say that the Lord works in mysterious ways - what should be said about politicians and diplomats?
