What Will a Brown Government Do? It is now clear that Labour and Tony Blair have won the British election. It is the first time they have won three times in a row. The margin seems to get quite narrow, though, and the enthusiasm for Mr Blair even in the own party has been limited this time. He has said that he will leave office during this term, and some speculate that it will happen already during this fall. At the British Embassy this morning it was said that he might do it even sooner. A weakened Mr Blair cannot persuade his party into more renewal of policies and new, bold, steps. Thus, it is said, the more liked Gordon Brown should step in. The problem is that he probably doesn′t want renewal of policies; he is much more of a traditional Labour politician. Some commentators have said that this was the sixth victory for Margaret Thatcher - who has called Tony Blair her greatest achievement - since New Labour has changed nothing back from her, at the time, radical changes. But with Mr Brown as PM, it it not likely to be another term without changing the fundamentals of Thatcher′s Britain. Labour have already revealed plans to increase public spending faster than any other country in the western world. This, by the way, lead to a warning by the IMF recently. Either way, the force of new perspectives for a new era, with smaller government and empowerment of people, which was New Labour seems to have come to an end.
