Not Even a Poor Joke. The deputy prime minister of Greece has fended off criticism from Germany for Greece′s economic problems by blaming them on the Nazi occupation during World War II. This is as astonishing as it is appalling. First, Greece′s problems are home-made, after the war. Second, today′s Germany cannot be accused for what the Nazi′s did. No country has done more than Germany to transform itself and repay what was done during that time. Third, Germany′s wealth today is certainly not coming from what was done during the war. Germany was more devastated than probably any European country. Their success is a result of the free-market policies launched by Ludwig Eerhard after the war, known as Wirtschaftswunder. Greece is certainly not improving its reputation.
