Congratulations, Europeans, These Are Your Two Leaders! Herman Van Rompuy and Catherine Ashton may be up to the job. The point is that we have no idea. There has been no contest, no scrutiny, no involvement from people whatsoever. The process provides very limited democratic legitimacy, to say the least.
In choosing unknown candidates, the EU leaders have sought to keep the light on themselves. Then why would they want these positions to exist in the first place? I thought the main idea was to revive the EU, to give it a voice in the world and a clearer leadership.
If the State Governors of the United Staes were to appoint a Federal President, I am sure they would have acted similarly. They would not choose one who would have opinions of his or her own. It is not a European problem, it is the process. The European people would have chosen differently.
Up to meet Hu Jintao and Barack Obama?
