Buy Nothing Day - Like It? You may recall that some people who are critical against consumption have a Buy Nothing Day each year. They claim that consumption is bad for most everything, not least social values and the environment. With the recession, many people get lots of Buy Nothing Days due to unemployment or lower incomes. Is it really good for them? And are the effects on society particularly positive? The resources for health care and education fall. Governments get deficits and have to save. Fewer can purchase new and environmentally friendly products. So, consumption-critics, you got part of what you wanted. (I guess you would like to decrease consumption much more.) How many like this situation?
