President Obama. So John McCain has conceded in a very generous speech and Barack Obama has given an inspirational and powerful victory speech. The US has indeed proven today that it is a well-functioning democracy and a modern society, as Obama also pointed out. The difference in the popular vote is clear but not huge - 51/47. But in terms of electoral votes, it is substantial - so far 338/156. I just came from the Election Breakfast arranged by the US Embassy in Stockholm. Staring at 0430, it was a bit earlier than most breakfasts. Still, however, packed with people for this historic election. The Ambassador underlined the significance of what he referred to as a man of colour having been elected US President. I talked to him about the trade issue, and he believed that President Obama would follow a moderate policy.
