Election Day. Never before has an election campaign been as closely watched by the world as this one. It has been a thriller and a drama, but now it is over. The American people will now cast their votes.
Much suggests that Barack Obama will win, perhaps even a landslide victory. But opinion polls have been very wrong before. And John McCain, who yesterday spoke in seven states, does not give up.
A few things are rarely mentioned: First, expectations are very high. I doubt that even Obama can meet them. Second, the huge budget deficit will put strict constraints on the administration.
I am convinced that a President Obama would be inspirational. And he seems to handle crises well. But the rest of the world had better hope it is true that he has never meant what he said about foreign trade.
