No to Royal as President! The positions of the candidates for the next President of the French Republic get clearer. More substance is added to the style of both Nicolas Sarkozy and Ségoléne Royal. Needless to say, none of the candidates is free market or a classical liberal. It seems to be mroe of a battle between conservatism and socialism, to the limited extent that ideologies are part of the race. In an interview with the Times, however, Ms Royal just made some terrible remarks. Unless Mr Sarkozy takes a stand for something even worse - which is quite hard - I think we should all hope that Ms Royal will lose. She says, for example, that owners of companies should be "frightened" and talks of tough taxes and protectionism.
