Good Luck, Britain. The Financial Times reports that Britain, as the EU President, will have substantial cuts in the structural funds as a part of the proposal for an EU budget at the EU Summit on Dec 15-16. Of course, compared to the agricultural support, the structural funds are relatively small, but it is of course better than no cuts at all. Britain had to drop its proposal to cut the EU agriculture subsidies due to, as it is described, "minimal support". Scandalous. Everyone knows how extremely harmful those subsidies are. But when you get a majority dependent on the state - the EU, in this case - it is very hard to reverse. The share of the population that is dependent in this case may be tiny, but all the member states are receivers. An argument against ever introducing state subsidies indeed.
