CER: Why Europe Should Embrace Turkey. The obstacles in the way of Turkey′s EU membership seem to increase by every week that passes. Currently, the German election campaigns have debated the issue in negative terms - and the standpoint on Turkey and the EU is, in my view, the greatest disadvantage with the CDU/CSU program. Previous obstacles include public opposition to Turkish membership (though Swedes turn out to be more positive than the EU average), the EU′s struggle to digest its latest enlargement, the Cyprus question, and not least the fundamental issues about whether the EU should be a Christian club or a union of religious freedom. In a new publication from the Centre for European Reform, Chief Economist Katinka Barysch and co-authors give many strong economic, political and strategic arguments for why the EU should embrace Turkey and not stop or delay the accession process.
