Further EU Enlargement! One very positive effect of the Lisbon Treaty being ratified is that it makes further EU enlargement easier. (Or, at least, it makes it more difficult for countries like France to stop it.) Since enlarging the single market and promoting reforms in accession countries has been the greatest EU success story, this is very important. I have personally argued for many years that Turkey must be allowed as an EU member. Perhaps this is now more on track than it has been during the past years.
