Lower Poverty in the US Than in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Finland. In the Unites States, incomes differences are bigger than in most European countries. But since average income is substantially higher, so are incomes for most of the poor. If we compare actual income levels between Western European countries and the US, some myths about the US and poverty go bust. We find that the share of the population which is poor is actually higher in many Western European countries. See Diagram 2 in this article. (Thanks, Dick)
