EU Commission: Defuse the Demographic Time-Bomb. A few days ago, the EU Commission presented a thorough analysis of the need for substantial reform of pensions, health care and elderly care in EU countries. Without reform, they conclude, the public deficits as a share of GDP will grow from today?s 63 per cent, on average, to 200 per cent in 2050. Thus, reforms must aim to have substantial parts of these services privately funded and delivered. That would not only solve the problems, but create better services by introducing free choice and competition.
